About Debé

Debé has been performing for over 25 years, and is a talented standout in the central Ohio music scene. She is a larger than life powerhouse and devotee of classic torch singing. Debé started her career in California in college, performing in local community theatres and singing in a vocal jazz group. She kept a pretty low profile in her mid-20's to mid 30's, periodically singing in piano bars, and at special events.

Debé moved to Ohio over ten years ago, and eventually met Steve Salyer, and formed the duo Gallery. When Steve moved to Thailand, she decided she to focus on a solo career singing jazz, blues, and cabaret music. Jazz allows her to make the most of her sultry low voice, and cabaret allows her to flex her ham bone, and really play to the audience. Debé has a penchant for boas (she has about a dozen), and she's never without one or two when she's performing. When it comes to Broadway, Debé shows off her powerhouse vocals, belting out show tunes like When You're Good To Mama, which has become her signature song. As Debé began performing her original music, she has found an affinity for the blues which she continues to explore.

In 2002 she began performing with Mary Lou Roberts and Mary Hough. They formed the jazz trio Rhythm Method, and continue to prove how well three broads can play jazz. The band's music is infused with rhythm, adding sultry Latin and smoky blues undercurrents to create a unique sound. Rhythm Method has a great time on stage and enjoys throwing some fun into the mix with their campy hijinx. They wow fans with powerful renditions of jazz standards like "Summertime" and "Route 66," along with a liberal sprinkling of popular crowd favorites like "Chain of Fools" and "Mustang Sally". The band's repertoire includes songs made famous by such artists as Ella Fitzgerald, Carole King, Stevie Wonder, and Bonnie Raitt.

In 2006 Debé teamed up with Bobby Hamlin, who recently returned to Columbus after many years in Colorado. Bobby is an extremely talented musician and entertainer. He is a man with 1000 voices and combined with Debé’s vocal talent, they are a can’t miss combination, covering jazz , pop, and Broadway favorites. They recently completed work on a holiday CD entitled Debé – Naughty and Nice, that debuted in December 2006. In addition to performing all around Columbus, they are currently collaborating on some of Debé original lyrics, and will be working in 2007 on the CD release of Well Rounded Woman, which includes many of her songs, with music and arrangements written by Bobby.

In addition to the trio, Debé performs regularly with Norwin Mergler, whom she met in 2003 while they were both entertaining at a Human Rights Campaign annual gala. They are quite a dynamic duo. He's hot on the keyboards, and he enjoys cabaret music and camp as much as Debé. Debé has also been a featured vocalist with other Jazz Ensembles, and has worked with many fine musicians.

So, whether you're looking for a classy talented duo for a intimate affair, or you prefer a more spirited show with a trio or full band, Debé has the experience and professionalism to please a very diverse crowd.
